Action Alert! Ask your municipal politicians to support a BC wide inter-community bus network. Get them to submit this resolution to the 2021 Union of BC Municipalities AGM. The submission deadline is June 30th so please act now!
Whereas there is no provincial or national inter-community bus network in Canada ; and
Whereas an integrated provincial and national inter-community bus network is an essential service; and
Whereas the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls calls for “all governments to ensure that adequate plans and funding are put into place for safe and affordable transit and transportation services” ; and
Whereas the for-profit model of highway bus service has failed to serve the public interest; and
Whereas BC Transit’s BC Bus North provides a route model that could be improved upon and expanded; and
Whereas, mobility rights are protected in Section 6 of The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms; therefore
Be it RESOLVED that the Union of BC Municipalities direct the Provincial Government to immediately prioritize and fund a province-wide publicly-owned and operated inter-community bus network; and
Be it further RESOLVED that the Union of BC Municipalities direct the BC Government to lobby the federal government to develop a national inter-community bus network.
